XV (the “teener”)

I hated this bar initially because Roman numerals in a name are lame. Especially when it’s isn’t clear that they are numbers. I mean, how the fuck should I know this place isn’t called “Ex Vee” rather than “15″? It doesn’t have enough digits! Roman numeral usage should be proportial to the size of the number, which is why XV looks like a gender, but MCMXCVIII looks like a Superbowl! And that leads to the real problem with Roman numerals; they’ve been usurped by meatheads for their fraternal organizations, sporting events, and bars that watch ESPN.  15 SW Second Ave Portland, OR 97204 Phone: (503) 790-9090 Luckily, we’re taking them back (“we” being non-meatheads)....

The Coffee Plant

Recent studies have discovered that bike-related economic activity in Portland is experiencing an unprecedented boom, as record new jobs are created to service the flourishing industry market.  This is pretty great news in these troubled financial times, but unfortunately the study fails to include one key area of the bicycle...

Cup & Saucer &#...

I used to really like the Cup and Saucer on Hawthorne, but the weekend wait kept getting longer. And it was one of those awkward restaurants with a giant window in the front. Where you look in at the people eating with a face strained with hunger pain, and they look out at you with pity. But not so much pity that they stop...

Vendetta

It’s no secret that I like to get drunk. I once read that a glass of red wine each night reduces the risk of heart disease, so I’ve always assumed that larger doses and greater alcohol content could cure all kinds of ailments, including conversational awkwardness, an inability to tell interesting stories, and a...

Pause Kitchen

I like meat and beer. Not together. Well, yes. Together. But not in the same glass or anything. I like my meat on a plate, and my beer in a glass. Near each other. Close enough that I can consume them both in turn, depending on my desire. The patterns change, but it’s generally just a variation of this. Beer. Beer. Meat. Beer. Meat. Meat. Meat. Beer. Something like that. Anyway, Pause has meat and beer*. Nice local beers and (I’m told) nice local meats. And while there are lots of places that serve both meat and beer, Pause puts them together on the menu as a special, and they leave it there all of the time. Which you might think would make it less special, but you’d be wrong. It IS special. ALL THE TIME. The deal is...

McMenamins Rock Cree...

Once the wunderkinds of the Portland beer scene, the McMenamins have fallen out of favor with the cool kids, it seems. They ran around Oreogn buying schools and railroad stations and hotels and funeral homes, gave them all identical menus, then vomitted hippie paint all over the walls until they were indistinguishable. Lesson...

Pho Green Papaya

402 SE M L King Blvd Portland, OR 97214 (503) 231-1431 Pho, in all of its soupy splendor, is all I ever really want to eat in the Winter. Maybe not every day, but at least five times a week. I hang my head over the bowl and let my glasses fog up and I make it spicy that I flop sweat like Richard Nixon during the debates...

Albina Press

Something about the lighting at Albina Press makes everyone look prettier. nike air max flyknit It comes in through all of the giant windows, bounces off of the modern seating options and the monstrous espresso machine, and hits everyones face like the hanging light of a sunset. People glow like they just slept with someone...
